The work of Aldwin van de Ven (1980, NL) is to a large extent about the relation between form and leftover form, foreground and background, manipulated in such a way that the perspective changes. Fragments of reality, dreams, and memories are important sources of inspiration for Van de Ven. Recognisable elements such as human figures are placed against a simplified background to create a feeling of surrealistic spatiality. A spatiality that seems so huge, it’s as if the elements in the foreground are swallowed up by the monochromatic void of the background. The final composition is the result of form and colour study on the one hand and coincidence on the other. Van de Ven continues this playing with spatiality in his sculptures. A setting that initially occurred only in a painting is carried on in three-dimensional works.
