Bas de Jager (The Netherlands, 1984) graduated in 2016 from the Amsterdam Fotoacademie. His work focuses on empty spaces, some already existing, others he created himself, using nothing but his own imagination as inspiration. These vacant and often dark spaces, where there is only the slightest suggestion of architecture, reflect the reality of contemporary life: people living alongside each other, but without having any true meaningful contact. The spaces are a metaphor for the struggle of the individual, the artist himself, who has lost the connection with his surroundings. The absence of humans in De Jager’s spaces echoes this sense of disconnect, and amplifies the sense of infinity in his work. His images function as a form of escape and consolation from reality, where one can feel lonely even among the largest of crowds. In sharing pieces of his world, however, De Jager has found a way to reconnect with the people around him.
