The object plays a central part in the paintings of Britt Dorenbosch. Using clear structures and powerful colour combinations, she enhances simplified shapes of the images in her direct surroundings. Sometimes the objects have been withdrawn from their environment. In other cases she paints the things in the exact state she has found them, changing only minor details.

Britt Dorenbosch keeps her work lively by painting quickly and accurately. With her temperamental and sketchy brush strokes she investigates the technical side of painting. She investigates how to simplify the images without affecting their recognisability. Moreover, a tension between figuration and abstraction presents a key element in her work.

The composition of the paintings provides an extra layer in the experience they offer. Objects are arranged in atypical still lives. Recognizable elements — such as a piece of chicory, an orange or a bottle — draw attention and invite further exploration of the composition. Enlarging the subject places it on a pedestal. This literally creates the space to paint.
