Djojo & Versteeg consists of two artists who formed a duo during their time in art school. The duo is based in Rotterdam. Rik Versteeg (26) graduated as a fine-art photographer in 2013; Danny Djojosoedarmo (22) is a self-educated make-up artist and stylist.

By combining forces, they found a way to complement each other’s skills, and to create images that capture the essence of human experience and immediately project it into a fantasy realm. The result is marked with both imagination and a thought-provoking reference to the real world.

Djojo & Versteeg about their work:

“We aim to create aesthetic, conceptual and stylized imagery based on social themes. We want you to rethink issues that you are not likely to think about, by using topics that currently play an important social role.”

The work of the duo unveils a careful process that can be considered an investigation into the liminal area in which imagination and perceptual reality find an unexpected point of convergence. They aim to show the viewer an undiscovered and subconscious world with their photography. Most of their inspiration is drawn from theories, myths, technology and diversity, but most importantly; the way human beings are able to relate to it.

At This Art Fair, QLICK Editions will show work of their ‘Masquerade Ball’ series. It is a series inspired on the Masquerade balls in the 15th century. These involved royal entries, pageants and triumphal processions, marriages and other dynastic events of late medieval court life. Eventually these events extended into costumed public festivities in Italy during the 16th century Renaissance. These were generally elaborate dances held for members of the upper classes, and were particularly popular in Venice. In the 17th and 18th century masquerade balls became popular in Europe with sometimes fatal results. Guest could infiltrate events by wearing a masque and they were unrecognizable and could pretend to be someone else.

The work of Djojo & Versteeg has been exhibited and published online and in magazines and newspapers, such as De Volkskrant, Wylde Magazine, Blend/Bureaux, HP de Tijd, CitizenMAG, New Dutch Photography Talent, Vondel CS, the Dutch Ministry of Finance and Foamlab.
