Whereas most photographers settle for truthfully capturing the world around us, Erik Klaassen designs his own universes in his work. In many of his works, we visit, in a voyeuristic manner, total strangers, who may or may not be aware of our presence. The result is an intense, but at times also humorous or alarming visit to a dream world.

Although Erik’s work seems to consistently assume an apocalyptic and lonely world, the distance created by the diffuse effect of the lens leads to a secure objectivity. Watching his works challenges us to explore the boundary between illusion and reality. An exploration into our own position with regard to shame, loneliness, but also beauty.

Erik Klaassen (1978) graduated in Fine Arts from Artez Arnhem (2008).
