Gijs Frieling makes ornamental paintings and (temporary) murals of plants, animals, gardens and architectural elements that influence the atmosphere of the entire space he works with. His aim is to show nature as an intentional creation. In his works he incorporates -remakes of- works by other artists. Sources of inspiration like books and reproductions are often presented in or next to the work. His work is an attempt to present the development of painting as an entity in which the differences between decorative arts, folk art, religious painting, ‘high art’ and the avant-garde are merely contextual.
