For Dutch artist Guda Koster, there is more to clothing than meets the eye. Using installations, living sculptures and photographs, the Amsterdam-based creative explores the theme of fashion through ground-breaking lenses. From sewing the clothes and building the set to taking the photos she appears in, she is a true Do It Yourself kind of artist.
Standing in front of Guda’s unexpected, surreal artworks – showcasing craftsmanship and attention to detail – wonder about the creation process comes natural. ‘A work may start with the pattern of a fabric found on the market or it may start with an idea,’ Guda explains. ‘The idea may seem fantastic, but the implementation is often inadequate’. To achieve the impressive visual results, constant adjustments to the designs, the sets or the installations are in order.
The contrast between what is visible and what is invisible is also something that Guda likes to play with. The impossibility of seeing the faces of the subjects, which are covered with small houses, geometric shapes, or burdens of a social or religious nature, erases the limits between man and context, raises the mystery and appetite to learn more, lending the work a universal value.
