Jef Stapel about his work: “I like to look at the backs of sheds, worn thresholds and greasy patches around light switches. What does the inside of the wall look like? And why should a ceremonial portrait be more important than an old piece of plywood? I want to know what is on the blown away pieces of paper lying under a bush. All those houses with attics, with cabinets, with drawers containing all sorts of little things…  All those stories that are so different yet also similar.”

Jef Stapel works with discarded plywood boards he finds in the streets. He saws, breaks and cuts them, and uses chisel, glue and hammer. And sometimes he adds a little paint.

Jef Stapel grew up in the same tiny Dutch village as Serge Steijn. After fifteen years they met again and found interesting similarities in their art work. That’s why they exhibit together at This Art Fair 2015.
