“Feeling homesick for a place that never existed.” The urge to grasp this unexplicable feeling is the driving force behind all my work. At first I literally searched for places: interiors in China, nature in Japan and Tibet. Now it is more accidental enchantment – a sudden flash of recognition, a memory seeping back to me like a thin ray of sunlight, burning its way through the clouds of time. I sit still in silent anticipation. Reliving that first encounter, realizing that it is gone forever. Joy and sadness inseparable in one image.

Map (Marrigje) de Maar is an autonomous artist/photographer. She works with pinhole cameras on film. At This Art Fair, images from her upcoming book “Accidental Enchantment” will be on show, together with very special prints from her long, lonely walks in Japan and Tibet (2013-2016).
