Matthias Schaareman is fascinated by the stories that old houses tell us. Loads of things have happened in these places where people lived, and a lot of memories are encapsuled in walls, ceilings and floors. Because of this fascination, architectural elements play a leading part in Schaareman’s works. Schaareman tries to unravel and deconstruct the memories houses hold by using building fragments, wall paper patterns, or even the appearance of an ancient floorboard. The artist takes them out of their normal conditions, and uses them as the building bricks of slightly abstract compositions containing seemingly disconnected components. The interaction between decoration and architecture plays an important role in his works. The results are mysterious and sensual drawings that give away their stories one bit at a time.
