Peter Vianen is fascinated by the way ideals of spiritual transcendence ultimately get run into the ground by their own internal logical inconsistency. Still, the need for spiritual transcendence keeps finding new ways of expressing itself in new forms and shapes in a variety of settings, such as myths and legends, but also in sexuality, politics, and science. Using the medium of the artist’s book, Peter Vianen satirically investigates how these phenomena are produced by our need for the divine, and even finds beauty in the intellectual shipwrecks that inevitably result. The visual language is often inspired by comic books and combined with sound art and extensive language experiments. Peter Vianen often works under the name of Pierrot Vianoupoulos.
