My drawings are characterized by all kinds of interwoven memories. In this day and age, the daily overload of images results in an increase of intertwined personal and collective memories. With my drawings I invite people to take a moment to acknowledge this, to reflect and dream. Not by seeing one direct image, but by searching through the drawing. I focus on the ‘minor’ memories, meanwhile wondering: what is authentic and what is not? Or maybe that’s not even important at all. Are we mainly just searching for an overall, comforting and explanatory story by using our own ‘alternative facts’? And aren’t we still living in an ancient tradition of making up stories, despite all our modern ideas? This is why I choose to work with charcoal, one of the oldest drawing materials.
