My work consists of tapestries and sculptures of human and animal figures, made of a variety of textiles.
My work is about exploration of the imagination and the interpretation of memories. To get a grip on a theme that is as complex and elusive as memories, I consider it as a shadow. I thought of how to revisit or highlight a memory through experience, passage of time, new insights or position. How you can change them, how can you discolour them?
For my sculptures and tapestries, I mainly use textiles such as wool, carpets, embroidery, lace, ribbon, table runners, costumes and pieces of clothing, complemented with pieces of furniture and metal.
I prefer working with old and used materials. My fascination with textiles originated in my childhood. In my family’s home, there was a storage space that we called ‘behind the curtain’. There was a large collection of old clothing and textiles. I found it intriguing that the material gave access to other lives and another world.www.barbarapolderman.nl
