The works I am exhibiting at This Art Fair are layered abstractions. Though the shapes are based on gemstones, they have taken on their own character. The images take into consideration reflection, colour, tonal transitions, the small details and the larger whole.
The paintings were made on 2.2 cm-thick MDF cut into shapes and the edges milled. I paint the MDF forms using acrylic paint. Technically, the surface sometimes has an airbrushed appearance, but it is always painted with brushes and rollers. By sculpturally rendering the MDF’s surface and shape, the work becomes an object and painting, which I hang as tightly to the wall as possible.www.barbarahelmer.nl
