Britte Koolen shares a booth with Majda Vidakovic

My work consists of modular sculptures and installations that often enter into a relationship with their environment. The sculptures consist of different materials in which craftsmanship plays a central role.

In a world dominated by speed, haste and a constant urge for ‘more’, I search for the opposite with my sculptures: the small, the subtle and the inconspicuous. The sculptures may initially stand out because of their bright colour, but the true power of the work only reveals itself when you take the time to do so. It is an invitation to discover the essence, to find a power in simplicity that is not always immediately visible.

In the year 2023, Majda Vidakovic and I met during a residency in Portugal. The residency gives access to the area where the remains of the CUF empire are located, such as the old paint factory, empty warehouses, crumbling concrete structures and a landscape full of abandoned materials and objects. During This Art Fair, Majda and I both show in our own way how we have used this residency – and the time after – to create new work.
