We design objects to fit our needs, but they often end up redesigning the way we live. Cas van Deurssen’s work operates at the intersection of sculpture, painting and installation, where contrasts such as craftsmanship and mass production, absurdity and functionality, and visibility and concealment converge. Through layered visual language and experimental material use, Cas explores how objects shape our behaviour and how we relate to the things that surround us.

Cas’ practice draws inspiration from both industrial production processes and meticulous craftsmanship, combining techniques like screen printing, epoxy and metalwork with unconventional materials. Reflection and transparency play a crucial role: what demands attention and what remains hidden create a tension between the image and the viewer.

Themes such as play, display culture and industry run throughout Cas’ work. Everyday objects—such as toys, packaging, or functional tools—often take center stage, but they are displaced from their original context and meaning. This results in works that balance humour and critique, attraction and disruption.

Cas’ work invites a playful yet critical perspective on the systems and structures we inhabit. By rearranging objects and images in new ways, he investigates the boundary between utility and ornament, between illusion and function.
