I am a painter and I use press photographs as a canvas. In my work I investigate the relationship between men and nature, especially the tension between the presence and absence of humans in a landscape. For my work I use photos in which nature and people meet in a confronting, distorted way, in subjects such as tourism, war and migration.
I create new versions of photographed landscapes by painterly removing the people – in their roles as tourists, refugees and soldiers – that were originally present. As a result the focus in the image shifts from human to landscape and a more ideal reality seems to arise, but the missing subject remains subtly visible.
