Artist Duo: Jolanda Jansen & Myrthe Rootsaert

Since 2007 we have been working together on projects on location. Since 2014 we have been making videos. Our creations arise from a spontaneous creative process. Our videos are partly inspired by Facebook videos in which the private is being shamelessly exhibited. Also, the speed of our images corresponds to the quick movement through images in Facebook and Youtube videos. As for materials, we recycle them from office or studio buildings, as in today’s conscious recycling society. We search for a contrast between feminine and industrial materials. The theme that we touch upon here is the blurring of boundaries between men’s and women’s issues. We are self-reliant women who like to work with tough material.

By using everyday materials in a totally different way than they were intended, we create a unique combination which has its own style. This style is characterized by a shameless playfulness in a surreal environment. Within this environment, we move without fear of imperfection or the inclination to escape from reality. Weirdly enough, the situations are recognizable; just like people searching on Facebook for recognition and acknowledgment. During the manufacturing process, we are aware of the total picture that we are constructing.
