I come from a close family where family ties, trust and being there for each other are very important values that have shaped the way I view the world. As a photographer and filmmaker, I focus on intimacy, connection and closeness. I create photos and videos with a documentary character.
At This Art Fair, I am showing my biggest body of work: ‘Sometimes I am fourteen’ (2020 – ongoing). I explore the relationship between me and my eight years younger brother, Lawrence. Lawrence and I understand each other, speak the same language, with and without words. Because we share our lives and our childhood. Because we are both artists. The trust and the close bond we share, retains its strength when I hold my camera between the two of us. By documenting Lawrence’s transition into adolescence, I simultaneously reflect on my own childhood experiences. ‘Sometimes I am fourteen’ touches on universal themes of growing up and self-discovery.
I want to capture what is important right now: connection. In these times of distrust, misunderstanding of each other and increasing divisions in society, I want to create a counter movement with my work, showing that we are all connected, that we are all human and essentially the same.
