Fossil fuel companies fund cultural institutions to clean up their public image. This recognised marketing strategy is known as artwashing.
Fossil Free Culture NL is a collective of artists and activists working at the intersection of art and climate activism. Their goal is to confront oil and gas sponsorship of public cultural institutions in the Netherlands through disobedient art. They are committed to terminally eroding the fossil fuel industry’s public image and their social license to operate.
Fossil Free Culture NL’s work is not only changing the public perception on oil and gas sponsorship. It is also effective. The Van Gogh Museum dropped Shell as a sponsor last August and quickly washed all traces to their former patron from their website. Immediately after, two further major Dutch institutions, the Mauritshuis and Museon in The Hague, also severed their ties with Shell in what appeared to be a coordinated decision.
