Frijke Coumans is a photographer who graduated in Photography at the Academy of Art and Design AKV|St.Joost in Breda. Currently Frijke lives and works in Antwerpen. She is intrigued by the difficult relation between the desire for control and balance, and the desire for chaos and irrationality. She finds these seemingly contradictory desires amazing and strikingly present in everyday life.
Frijke thinks the power of images is that they can portray what we cannot really comprehend with words. Images provide a totally different way of understanding and exposing reality and all those complex and infinite others around us. Inspired by Emmanuel Levinas and Friedrich Nietzsche, she investigates her surroundings, her own behaviour and assumptions, and tries to turn these into new experiences: the experience is the only certainty.
Gardeners of Desire (2018)
With their heads filled with desires they listen to the unknown sounds, and ask where the melodies arise.
Others lead them to beautiful gardens and blank walls, but here the sounds of the dark cannot exist.
Environments repleted with rest only reveal the unrest. We can only roam in orderliness and harmony.
Only those who were born in the night can comprehend the language of the melodies.
