Gijs van Noort’s work is an inquiry into the narrative possibilities of paint. This narrative dimension naturally implies figuration, which, while not necessarily realistic, produces associations.
A constant factor in the work of van Noort is a structure, typically consisting of elements of waste which relate to each other under the influence of sharp light.
The work fits into the romantic tradition: this is highlighted by the prominent role of light but also by the works’ relationship with folly; the uselessness, the rubbish in this case, which asks the viewer for reflection.
That which was once of value, but which over the course of time regresses into rubbish; which generates stories at the edge of oblivion, and lets itself be heard one last time.
At This Art Fair, Gijs van Noort exhibits his most recent work.
