Jarle’s PREMIUM BANANAS collection is a reaction to the abundance of existing products. The objects in this collection are a direct translation of other possible functions the most common abundant products could have. A cardboard box becomes a table. A pallet becomes a sofa. Visual elements of different products become intertwined in one design. The shape and function of different kinds of objects become mixed with each other and functions are no longer defined but open for new interpretations.
By exploring relationships between do-it-yourself culture, exclusive design and consumerism, I call into question the functions of everyday objects and the value we assign to them.
Schooled as a product designer, I analyse my own position in consumer society and the role I play in the supply chain. Without providing clear answers, I play with icons of consumption and transform the functions and meanings of abundantly available products. When visual elements of various products are intertwined, functions are no longer defined and are open for new interpretations.www.jarle.nl
