The vast interior
Have I succeeded as a person? That is a question to which I never find a satisfactory answer. I want to be the best possible version of myself. Self-development sounds like a good idea, but how do you actually do that? As a result of this uncertainty, I dream almost every night about construction workers who are renovating a strange nocturnal landscape.
It is not clear what the work is. The workers are lugging ladders back and forth and are taking unclear measurements. My internal landscape is being diligently mapped out. The area needs to be improved, it seems. And then I wake up again.
I wonder what the end point is. Maybe this job cannot be completed. A renovation without a blueprint or design. Phillip Akkerman, the Netherlands’ most famous (living) self-portrait artist, says about this: “the meaning of life is making a self-portrait”. Maybe I should just leave it at that.
