Maarten shares a booth with Anan Striker & Michiel van der Werf
Maarten Nico is an Amsterdam-based artist on a quest to infuse conceptual art with a much-needed dose of romance and intimacy. His work moves fluidly between past, present and future. By weaving together philosophical, (art) historical and contemporary cultural references, he constructs narratives and images that explore meaning, authenticity and ideology. Curiosity, wonder and a personal perspective are always the starting points. The form and medium adapt to each subject, resulting in a diverse practice unified by a distinct visual language marked by style, approach, and a touch of humour.
At This Art Fair, he presents a series of Plasterboard Mosaics that are inspired by the Peter Pan syndrome in combination with his personal life. It was during home renovations that he accidentally discovered the multipotentiality of plasterboard. Whilst building a wall, his mind already wandered, imagining himself playing basketball in the sun on a city court. In this manner, through playful experimentation, sheer chance and daydreaming, Maarten stumbled upon his own distinctive artistic discipline: Plasterboard Mosaics.
