Maarten Nico is a young, Amsterdam based artist on a quest to infuse conceptual art with a much-needed dose of romance and intimacy.
Through a plethora of media, he interweaves personal mythology with art history, existentialist literature and skater humour.
Ever since graduating from the Dirty Art Department of the Sandberg Institute, he has been trying to figure out what it means to be an artist in this age.
What conversation do we need to have? Is the struggle an unavoidable fact, or a self-fulfilling prophecy? Do I need to take control, or am I just fine, being adrift?
A collage of found objects, lovingly crafted vignettes and visual gags, unveils his position in the world as a young artist and as a hopeful, romantic individual.
Maarten Nico’s artworks convey these issues to the spectator in the form of a disarming, honest dialogue that branches out from the highly personal to the metaphysical.
Uncertainty, awkwardness and failure are important strategies in his work.
Imperfection, or rather non-professionalism, offers freedom of movement and thought.
Irony is a barren, worn-out track going nowhere, while sincerity is difficult to reach but still forms a promising destination.
He opens up and hopes you will too.
