For some years now, Mattijs van den Bosch has been depicting street scenes and city landscapes. In his paintings, one can see road workers and people in the streets. As a painter it is easy for him to identify with these workers and their down-to-earth labour. He relates to their concentrated ways when working, because it reminds him of his own solitary work as a painter.
More recently, van den Bosch has been working on a series of paintings depicting the street objects that we often pass by in daily life. Street furniture, accessories, building sites and other city event props. Depicted in a minimal way, isolated for the sake of their colour or monumentality, or shown as the clusters of colourful objects that appear to us in the streets.
Mattijs van den Bosch likes to think of the small panels he made in this latest series as small mosaic stones. Colourful mosaic stones that when put together will form an image of the modern city. He takes pride in the fact that his paintings show and reflect the times we live in.
