Maureen Jonker explores the possibilities to arrange the human body in new spaces and situations. This interest comes from a sport she has been practicing for several years: synchronised swimming. This sport is not directly translated to her work, but the need to create choreographies does form the starting point.
In her work she combines the human body with self-created environments, which she calls scenarios. The spaces (material and immaterial) consist of materials such as cardboard, wood and canvas, but are also formed through the boundaries of a choreography. Within the immaterial scenarios, stamina and the proportions of the human body represent an important role. Is the human body forming according to the scenarios or are the scenarios created to coalesce with the human body?
For This Art Fair she created a new performance: Composition of Transformations #2. In this work she is trying to connect the performers to the environment, while the performers are trying to hold positions.
