Forget everything you associate with the term “coloured pencil” and enter the world of Patricia Paludanus. This artist, who after many explorations in various media has returned to the modest tool of her childhood, takes both material and viewer to unexpected places, from the faintest corner of heaven to the darkest caverns of the soul. Applied in dense, thick layers that leave no individual strokes visible and turn the surface of her drawings into a velvet like skin, colour becomes object – something to hold or desire, taste, smell. Pulsating pigments in curious combinations oscillate between 2D and 3D, weaving the abstract and the figurative to forge otherworldly tableaus.
Through a process of free association, using the familiar pencil in an unfamiliar, almost unrecognizable way, she draws herself back to an early magical seeing that we all must have experienced when our eyes were brand new. Scrambling time and place as she goes along, combining hard edges with flowing lines, stark geometry with suggestive, sometimes eerie shapes and bold neons with the subtlest gradients of subdued shades, Paludanus creates landscapes and scenes of a surreal nature that open doors to the unknown spaces within us.
