The oil paintings in the series “The Most Important Job” are based on stills from reality shows about parenting, like “Supernanny”. I chose scenes in which the dream of blissful parenthood is thoroughly shattered, from the children’s as well as the parent’s perspective. I would like to make a plea for a more empathetic attitude towards children, since they are totally dependent on their caretakers. But at the same time I realise that it’s not possible to raise a child without damaging it. Every child needs to sometimes be forced to brush their teeth, get dressed in time and eat their vegetables. And maybe being powerless is a lesson we all need to learn sooner rather than later; for in even the most democratic of societies we are subject to the government.
