I don’t want my paintings to be limited by myself as the maker, so I actively look for ways to outsource certain steps of the painting process. In my series ‘Degrees of Freedom’, I engage in a dialogue with AI to push beyond the limits of my own conditioning.

Early on, I used a simple chair as a neutral motif, allowing me to focus on the technical aspects of painting without worrying about subject matter. I would feed an unfinished painting into AI and receive surprising variations, beautiful designs, or unexpected mistakes. Painting fragments of this imagery back onto canvas gave me the freedom to experiment with colour, texture, form and layering. Over time, the paintings evolved to include subtle references to political events, personal narratives, classical poetry, philosophy and even pop culture. The chair’s form gradually unraveled, and the process became a vessel for intuition, creative friction and discovery. This dynamic balance between control and surrender – creative freedom – between my hand and the machine is at the heart of ‘Degrees of Freedom’.
