Happiness is a matter of improvisation. Like, how are you going to make it nice, even when life is not always pleasant. The pictures are about how we transform things in our lives; from misfortune to happiness, from discomfort to ease, from nothing to something, from detachment to connection. There is always a moment when we try to hang the garlands anyway. The laugh and the tear.  Derkinderen shows the daily search for that attempt at happiness. All the little things that can sometimes turn life into a celebration, either intentionally or unintentionally. High expectations and the small fulfillment of them. The cliché wants you to be happy when you have a Ferrari. She disagrees with this ultimatum.

This is my look at life.

It’s about our daily search for happiness. I am interested in that search. There is a gap between a dream world and reality, I am interested in that gap. Duality is everywhere.

In my eyes, happiness is a way of improvising. In my images I show how we can transform situations and things in our lives. From unhappiness to happiness, from nothing to something, from de-connection to connection. There are so many small things that can intentionally or unintentionally bring a smile to your face.

The cliché tells you to be happy if you own a Ferrari, well.. I don’t agree with this ultimatum.
