S. Zanardo (1998, Italy) is a visual artist and performer currently based in Arnhem,
Netherlands.
Coming from a dance background, they studied Multimedia Arts at IUAV University (Venice,
IT), and subsequently focused on performance-oriented studies, such as Venice International
Performance Art Week (Venice, IT) and SNDO Intensive Program (Amsterdam, NL) in 2019.
Zanardo’s work is based on performative practices that are translated through different medias,
such as videomaking and installation, and the use of mass mediatic streaming platforms.
The notions of endurance, repetition and rituality are central points in Zanardo’s practice: in
particular, the concept of self-discipline is explored as a tool for the creation of new possibilities
and growth. Working within a constant de-composition and re-configuration process becomes
an instrument to navigate the interconnectedness between physical and emotional body, and
how the shaping of one inevitably influences the other.
Their current research also focuses on how the materiality of performance conveys within the
digital mediums used on a daily basis, such as livestream platforms and social medias. Zanardo
is interested in the translation of the physical body into digital image, as an extension of the self,
or rather a new, virtual entity, and the roles of empathy, exposure and vulnerability in this
process.
Zanardo moved to the Netherlands in 2020 and is currently attending BEAR (Base for
Experiment, Art and Research) at ArtEZ (Arnhem) under the guidance of Zhana Ivanova.
