Sevilay Maria is an inherently nomadic, autodidactic maker of analogue photographs, prints and portraits, currently based in Amsterdam. After some years at the KABK in The Hague, she decided to take her work elsewhere. She traveled through over thirty countries, documenting landscapes and people wherever she went, before specializing in wet plate collodion photography. The beauty of this technique is that it relies equally on the chemistry between photographer and subject and on a fluency in the chemical process involved. Working with different techniques and colours has led to a broad spectrum of work and most of all a lot of fun!
‘My process consists of looking past the obvious, close observation, and engagement with the subject. The challenge is to see beyond the distraction of the conspicuous to capture its unique self. My goal is to inspire those who see my work to look more carefully at the world around them, to discover beauty in unusual places’
During THIS Art Fair two special performances will take place by contemporary makers, presenting new technics and perspectives on Erotic, Porn and Feminism by Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and Denise Verschut. Both performers are admired by Van Dorst and co-stand holder Noorlander, for their powerfull performances, visionary concepts and endurance in movement.’
