‘The White Cube’ is a project in which I reflect on the experience of my hybrid identity. It reviews a personal universe where my history is framed and the heritage is ignored by others. The deviation from the dominant norm makes elusive and results in an inner challenge of looking at oneself through the eyes of a white society, while maintaining one’s self-definition. I explore this inbetweenness through processes such as alienation, invisibility and masking. At the same time, there is also the dream of a future, in which I can transform into a being that is no longer defined by geographical origin and roots.
My practice focuses on (post-)colonialism and the aftermath in which identity is constructed and produced. I investigate archetypal images and ideas that are present in a dominant society related to roots, heritage, history, black-and-white and femininity. To indicate the multiplicity of the subjects, I experiment with digital editing, abstracting images and the use of multimedia.
After studying at the Photo Academy of Amsterdam for four years, I graduated cum laude in May 2019 and was admitted to the Sandberg Institute (Rietveld Academie) where I’m currently doing the two-year master’s Moving Image (Resolution).www.siomaravanbochove.com
