What happens when you remove the core content? What remains and how does it function?
The paintings I present at This Art Fair may at first seem ‘formal-abstract’. They are constructed from solid lines, strict planes and shapes that in some cases only reveal themselves upon closer inspection.
The source material for my works comes from everyday visual culture: advertisements, packaging patterns. They are stripped of their guiding elements through digital means and carefully translated into paint on canvas.
For me as a painter, the computer, like the brush, is an indispensable tool. However, the outcome in paint on canvas is always the result of an intensive reconsideration of what was previously created on the computer screen.
I also find it important that the source (once specific and functional) remains present in the end result in some way. In this way, the work offers the viewer a form of recognition, an entrance to generating associations. At the same time, the image must be ‘open’ enough to also discover and appreciate its physical qualities.
