Daphne ter Wee (1980) lives and works in Zutphen. She studied mixed media at AKI Artez Academy of fine arts in Enschede. In 2010 she had her first major exhibition in Bergen, Norway. In 2011, ter Wee exhibited at the Twente Biennale in Hengelo. In that year she was also nominated for ‘Best of diplomas’ in Wroclaw Poland (2011), and won Young Talent Awards from Menzis Wageningen and Art Olive, Amsterdam.

Daphne ter Wee makes really seductive drawings. The manic scratches and sharp lines of the ballpoint literally carve images on the paper. The sleek lines of the tiles in combination with the cool blue colour of the ballpoint provide a cold and clinical impression. The contrast between light and dark enhances the dramatic effect. Intimate images with sharp edges that provoke and disturb.

A certain vulnerability provokes and seduces us into her perception. Daphne ter Wee explores the truth behind what we don’t want to see. What one is trying to hide the hardest is sometimes the most visible. Ter Wee is fascinated by the vulnerability, powerlessness and hidden destructive behaviour of human existence. She wants to expose the convictions we are expected to believe. The dark side of humanity. The self-portrait from within. What is made visible is different from what is seen. Ter Wee creates drawings that seem to present velvety images at first glance, but in the meantime show something else.
