During This Art Fair 2021, Benjamin Francis will adjust his presentation ‘A body without its flesh’ to fit the dimensions of a booth. This performative installation was his graduation piece for the 2020 finals of ArtEZ in Arnhem. In it, Benjamin combines sculptures of steel, plaster and soap with elements of fashion, a performance concerning power dynamics in art school and dress rehearsals. In a suggested space somewhere between a classroom and a morgue actors repeat phrases and perform cleansing rituals.

Through a juxtaposition of several disciplines and hierarchical systems, Benjamin tries to force systemic errors that lay bare the foundations of power and vulnerability involved in human growth. His work forms an interesting counterpoint to that of his booth mate, Hans van Haalen, who is more interested in visual systems than corporeal ones.
