Lisa van Casand’s work is investigative and inviting, in 2017 she won the Heden Startprijs (Heden starting prize). The jury was impressed with her talent to translate a complex investigation into a presentation that is aesthetically pleasing, but also presents food for thought. In the Fluorescent Signals 2017 series, Lisa experiments with measurements of the stress levels of plants in situations in which they cannot function optimally. The plants have been exposed to various circumstances: fire, chlorine, hydrochloric acid, boiling water, dehydration and the absorption of vinegar through roots. As a result of stress, the photosynthesis doesn’t work properly, which in turn leads to high fluorescence. Low fluorescence means that the plant is free of stress. The fluorescence is not visible to the human eye, but can be measured and photographed under controlled circumstances.
